Jamison, School of Science and Engineering, University of Abertay Dundee, Dundee, United Kingdom : , Energetic electron bunch measurement based on two electro-optic detection techniques Abstract: In this paper we describe two electro-optic detection techniques—delay-scan method and chirped-pulse methods (chirped-pulse spectrometer method and chirped-pulse cross correlation method), which are used to measure an electron bunch length. In delay-scan method a probe laser pulse (shorter than the duration of the electron bunch) is swept over the electron bunch, and the intensity of the light transmitted through a crossed polarizer is measured as a function of time. In this method, temporal resolution is high, but measurement speed is not ideal. In chirped-pulse spectrometer method, a linear chirped pulse of the probe laser, with a pulse length longer than the electron bunch length, and recording the wavelength spectrum of the chirped pulse which is transmitted through an analyzer. Since this method is single-shot, the measurement speed is high, but temporal resolution is limited. Differing from the way of receiving signal of chirped -pulse spectrometer method , in chirped-pulse cross correlation, the chirped pulse carrying the modulation and a part of the original optical pulse which has been split off before the optical stretching enter the second-harmonic crystal non-collinearly, and recording the single-shot cross-correlation of the chirped pulse transmitted through an analyzer with reference pulse.
