A MODEL OF THE NONSTATIONARY CHAR GE FLOW IN AN ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATOR     AM Meroth T Gerb er CD Munz AJ Schwab  Institut fur Elektro energiesysteme und Ho chspannungstechnik Universitat Karlsruhe Karlsruhe Germany  Institut fur Neutronenphysik und Reaktortechnik Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH Postfach Karlsruhe Abstract In this pap er the authors present a numerical mo del based on the combination of nite element and nite volume techniques for the self consistent coupling of Pois sons equation and the nonstationary current continuity equation The numerical metho ds are based on highresolution schemes develop ed in computational uid dy namics They represent a new approach in electrical engineering and esp ecially in electrostatics The continuity equation conservation of charge is solved in nonstationary form by means of a second order nite volume scheme for arbitrary non regular grids Time integration is p erformed either by a very robust explicit approach or by an implicit metho d where large time steps may b e chosen without restriction by the CFL condition The nite volume mesh is obtained from the top ological dual of the triangulation used for the nite element computation of Poissons equation The presented metho d p ermits mo deling of the propagation of charge pulses in precipitators with pulsed energization Mo del of pulsed energization Pulsed energization allows to increase the maximum op eration voltage and the charge density far b eyond the static breakdown magnitude Usually pulses with risetimes from nanoseconds up to some milliseconds are sup erp osed on to a DC
