“Mymajorisgone!”SomestudentsmayhavenoticedachangeinmajorsatmanyChineseuniversities.Recently,Chinahasintroducedathree-yearactionplantoimprovethewayuniversitymajorsaredeveloped.

Theplan,coveringtheperiodfrom2025to2027,aimsto(旨在)bettersupportthecountry’shigh-qualitydevelopmentandstrategicneeds.Itcallsfortherapidcreationofmajorsinnewandfutureindustrieswhileadjusting(调整)majorsthatareconsideredpoorqualityorhavelowstudentdemand.

Thisisnotthefirstgovernmentefforttoadjustuniversitymajors.A2023guideline(指导方针)setthegoalofupgrading20percentofthemby2025tomatchnewtechnologies,industriesandmodels.

ByAug28,thegoalsoftheguidelinehadbeenachieved.Inthepasttwoyears,universitiesacrossChinahaveadded3,715newbachelor’sprogramswhilecancelingorsuspending(暂停)6,638programs,accordingtoXinhua.

Importantly,a“greenchannel”hasbeensetuptospeeduptheapproval(批准)ofmajorsrelatedtothenation’slateststrategictargets(目标)withoutgoingthroughthenormalapplicationsteps.InSeptember2024,forexample,sixuniversities,includingBeihangUniversity,wereguidedbytheMinistryofEducationoutsidethenormalapplicationperiodtoestablishalow-altitudetechnologyandengineeringmajor.Thiswasdonetomeettherapiddevelopmentneedsofthelow-altitudeeconomy(低空经济).

Interdisciplinary(跨学科的)workisanotherimportantfeatureofthechanges.TheBeijingUniversityofPostsandTelecommunicationshasteamedupwithotheruniversities,suchastheBeijingFilmAcademy.Together,theyhavestartedfivejoint(联合的)bachelor’sdegreeprograms,including“digitalmediatechnology+digitalmediaart”and“AI+financialtechnology”.

AsChina’sindustrieshavebeenrapidlydeveloping,thereisagrowingneedforthecultivation(
