Abrake(Figure16-1)isadevicetosloworstopthemotionofamechanismorvehicle.1Types:1.FrictionBrakesFrictionbrakes,themostcommonkind,operateontheprinciplethatfrictioncanbeusedtoconvertthemechanicalenergyofamovingobjectintoheatenergy,whichisabsorbedbythebrake.Theessentialcomponentsofafrictionbrakearearotatingpart,suchasawheel,axle,disk,orbrakedrum,andastationarypartthatispressedagainsttherotatingparttosloworstopit.Thestationarypartusuallyhasalining,calledabrakelining,whichcangenerateagreatamountoffrictionyetgivelongwear;itformerlycontainedasbestos,butthisisbeingreplacedbylessefficientmaterialsforenvironmentalreasons.

Theprincipaltypesoffrictionbrakearetheblockbrake,thebandbrake,theinternal-shoebrake,andthediskbrake.Theblockbrakeconsistsofablock,thestationarypart,whichisshapedtofitthecontourofawheelordrum.Forexample,awoodenblockappliedtotherimofawheelhaslongbeenusedtosloworstophorse-drawnvehicles.Asimplebandbrakeconsistsofametalband,thestationarypart,whichcanbetightenedaroundadrumbymeansofalever.Itisfoundonhoistsandexcavatingmachinery.Theinternal-shoebrakehasadrumthatcontainstwostationarysemicircularpieces,orshoes,whichsloworstopthemotionofthedrumbypressingagainstitsinnersurface.Thisisthetypeofbrakemostoftenfoundonautomobiles,withaninternal-shoebrakedrumlocatedonthecentralpartofeachwheel.Adiskbrakeofthetypeusedonautomobileshasametaldiskandpistonswithfrictionpadsthatcancloseonthediskandslowit.
