Thisstandardcoverstherequirementsforwroughtaluminumalloysheetforexposedandunexposedbody and closure panel applications. Thisspecificationisapplicabletotwotypesofwroughtaluminumalloys;agehardenableandnon-agehardenable.Agehardenable(e.g.,6000series)aluminumalloyscanbeusedforexposedandunexposedapplications.Due to surfacecharacteristics,non-agehardenable(e.g.,5000series)alloysmaynotbesuitableforexposedapplications.

Agehardenablealuminumalloysattainanincreaseinstrengthduetostrainhardeningandacceleratedaging(precipitationhardening)whensubjectedtotheassemblyplantpaintbakecycle.Non-agehardenablealuminumalloysincreaseinstrengthduetostrainhardeningonly,andwillshowsomedecreaseinstrengthfollowingthepaintbakecycle.

Additionalrequirementsoragreementsshallbespecifiedbyeachregion(e.g.,GMNA,GME,GMLAAM,GMAP,etc.).

1.1Description.ThematerialdesignationisdefinedbytheGMWbasemetalspecificationnumber,basicaluminumalloyconcept(5000or6000),specialprocessingcategory,minimumasreceivedyieldstrengthandfinishtype.
