Executivesummary

•Fertilizersupplyshocksstartedin2020duetomultiplefactorsincludingCOVID-19related

supplychaindisruptions,highinputprices(e.g.,naturalgas),lowerproductioninEurope,

andexportrestrictionsfromChina.Asaresult,fertilizerpricesincreasedglobally,andin

Kenyafertilizerpricesincreasedby50–60%(2020–2021).1

•Maizeproduction(accountsforroughly85%oftotalcerealproductioninKenya)in2020–

2021droppedbyanestimated550,000metrictons(MT)2duetofertilizerpriceincreases

(resultinginlowerapplicationrates),persistentfailedrainfall(themostseveredroughtin

40years),amongotherfactors.Accountingfortimefromfarmtomouth,thisresultedin

apriceincreasefor1kgmaizeflourof30-65%in2022(beforetheGovernmentofKenya-

GoKsubsidyannouncedinJuly2022,whichwaslatersuspendedinAugust2022),3andthe

releaseofallnationalmaizereservesinMay2022.4

•AsaresultoftheUkraine-Russiaconflictandsustainedhighenergyprices,fertilizerprices

inKenyahaverisenfurtherbyapproximately70%nationallyfrom2021–2022.5

•TheWorldFoodProgramme(WFP)andBostonConsultingGroup(BCG)estimatethatthe

fertilizerpriceincreaseofapproximately70%(2021–2022),keepingallotherfactors

constant,couldresultinafurtherdropinmaizeyieldsin2022byanestimated400,000

MTnationally,representingadeclineof12%comparedto2021(oranestimated22%

declineifcomparedtoaverageproductionbetween2016-2020).Thiscombinedwiththe

dropseenin2020-2021accountsforapproximately950,000MTreductioninproduction

ofMaizeover2years.
