Therehewitnessed③theplightofordinarypeopleduringWorldWarII.Hewasmotivatedtocreatepaintingstoencouragethepublictohavefaithinthefinaltriumph④ofthewar.Heheldpaintingclassesandoftenmetotherculturalfigures⑤anddiscussedafuturenationalfineartsacademy⑥.;

Chongqingwasalsohishomebasewhenheundertook⑦three－yearjourneythroughoutthecountryandthenSoutheastAsiaandIndia,duringwhichhepainted,exhibitedandraisedfundsforChinesebackhomefortheirresistance⑧invaders.;AnongoingexhibitioninChongqingthroughSept.13,paystributetoXu’stimeinthebigcityalongtheYangtzeRiverbyshowing23ofhispaintings.ThenewmuseumcomprisestwomansionsinwhichXuhadlivedbetween1942and1946,insidetheShiFamily’sResidence.It’saplaceofgardensandmansionsblending⑨ChineseandWesternarchitectural⑩stylesbuiltin1931byawealthybusinessmaninChongqing.

Afterreturningtothecityfromhisjourneyabroad,Xuwasinvitedbythebusinessman,anartloverhimself,tomoveintohisfamilyestate.Forthenextfouryears,thetwomansionsbecameXu’shomeandstudio.
