Afterthepaintinghobbygroupsessionended,Matthewhurriedlyjoinedtheothermembersoftheschoolband.Theyhadanimportantperformancethatday.Asexpected,Matthewwaslateagain,hisbodycoveredindriedcolorfulpaintsandsweatingprofusely.Hewalkedbrisklyintothebackstage,changedintotheband’suniform,butthepaintstainswerestillfaintlyvisible.Unfortunately,Matthewhadnotpreparedhissheetmusic,soheappeareddistractedduringtheperformance,oftenhittingwrongchordsandunabletokeepupwiththerhythm,disappointingtheteam.Eventually,afteralongdayatschool,Matthewreturnedhomeexhausted.

Inhisbedroom,Matthewsatathisdesk,heavingaheavysighashelookedatthedeskstrewnwithstudybooksandsheetmusic.Heneededtopreparefortheupcomingexams,buthecouldhardlykeephiseyesopen.Thenextthingherememberedwashismotherwakinghimup.Hehadfallenasleepwithhisheadburiedinthedesk.Ashesatup,hismothergentlyremovedasheetofmusicstucktohischeek.Shelookedathersonlovingly,smoothinghismessyhair.
