In1954,RichardwasapproachedbyJeffBrown,themanagerofmusicianRayCharles.HeinvitedRichardtojoinRayCharles’newband.“TobeselectedbyRayCharleswasanhonortome.RayCharleswasexacting,”saidRichard.“Hewasaperfectionistandwasratherdemandingabouthismusic.”

RenaldRichardtouredallovertheSouthandWestwithRayCharles.Sittinginthebackseatofthecaronthewaytoaconcert,Richardwrotethesong“IGotaWoman”forCharles,whichbecameRayCharles’firstnumberoneradiohit.In1954,RenaldRichardleftRayCharles’band.However,hestayedfriendlywithRayCharlesovertheyears.Hebecamethehighschool’sbanddirectorinhishometownuntil1962.Fouryearslater,hemovedagaintoNewYorkCity.Overtheyears,RichardhaswrittenmanyothersongsthathavebeenrecordedbyartistsincludingJoeTurner,theBeatles,theRollingStonesandElvisPresleytonameafew.LivingnowinSouthernFlorida,Richardisstillactiveattheageof92.Asyoucansee,RenaldRichard’smusicaldaysarebynomeansnearanend.
