Thefoundingcommissioners:thecityofficialswhowereappointedtoestablishCentralPark.Commissionersareofficialsingovernment,esp.thoseinchargeofdepartments.ThefoundingcommissionersofCentralParkwerethelandscapearchitectsFrederickLawOlmstedandCalvertVaux.Thetwodesignedandoversawthefirst-phaseconstructionoftheParkwhichbeganin1858andendedin1878.

RobertMoses(1888—1981)wasaNewYorkstateandmunicipalofficialwhoseambitiouspublicworksprojectsofthe1930s,1940sand1950stransformedtheurbanlandscapeofNewYorkCity.HeexpandedtheState’sparksystemandbuiltnumerousparkwaysandhundredsofnewplaygroundsandparksandimportanthighways,bridgesandtunnelslinkingtheboroughsofNewYorkCity.

MosespreferredrecreationalfacilitiestotheruralscenerystressedbytheEnglishRomanticists,andanorderedandsymmetricaldesigninFrenchRenaissancestyle,evidentinthesouthernCentralPark.Therefore,underMoses,CentralParkgained19playgrounds,12ball-fields,handballcourts,andtheskatingrink.
