ForestpolicefromHongtupoTownship,SouthwestChinasYunnanProvince,finishedtheirannualpatrol(巡逻)ofafamedstopoversiteandhabitatformigratorybirdsintheAilaoMountainarea.

OfficerswiththeforestpolicestationofHongtupo,NanhuaCounty,enterforestsintheNanhuaareaoftheAilaoMountainNationalNatureReserveeverySeptemberandremainthereuntilthefollowingFebruary,saysZhangYueping,aninstructorwiththepolicestation.Duringtheirstay,theofficerspatroltheforestsinDazhongMountain,deepintheAilaoareatopreventpoaching(偷猎)andotherwildlifecrimes.

TheHongtupoForestPoliceStation,knownas“amigratorypolicestation”,wasestablishedin1984inresponsetoillegalpoachinginthemountain.Ahugevarietyofwildlifewashuntedtonearextinction,accordingtoZhang.Thepolicestationgotofftoaroughstart,withnorunningwater,nophoneservice,andsignificantchallengesinthedeliveryofsupplies.Initially,theofficershadnooptionbuttoliveintents.

Itwasnotuntil2010thatahousewasbuiltfortheofficersatthefootofDazhongMountain.Overnearlyfourdecades,forestpoliceinHongtupohaveenduredallkindsofharshconditionstoprotectwildlifeinthemountain.“Skinpeelingafterbadsunburn,frostbite,sleepingforhalfamonthunderamouldy（发霉的）blanketandhearingbearsgrowlatnightarewhatweveexperienced,”saysZhouPiyin,formerheadofthepolicestation,whoworkedatthestationforeightyears.

Difficultasthejourneyhasbeen,generationsofprotectioneffortshavepaidoff.Since2019,zerocasesofpoachinghavebeenreported.Villagershavealsosteppedupandcreatedtheirownforestprotectionmembers.
