Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom ‟s Confusion on Religion Young American‟s religious confusion Religion is the constant topic of John Updike ‟s novel. As it should be, in the novel Rabbit, Ran, religion plays an important role. In the novel, as Harry experienced everything that caused by his running, his opinion on religion has been changing. As Stanley Trachtenberg mentioned in his book New Essays on Rabbit, Run , the running of Harry was “primarily a religious struggle, ” which “represents an attempt to break from conventional ethics to pursue an inner vision that will invest life with meaning in the supposed absence of God”(14). After reading the novel, I think his confusion on religion keeps varying, and it can be divided into three steps. And by way of knowing how Harry‟s attitude on religion has changed, we can find the religious confusion of young American in 1950s and 1960s. When Harry lived in the house of Ruth, a girl he met and fell in love with on his running, his long-lasting faith on religion changed. This is the first time he doubted on religion. On a Sunday morning, when Rabbit saw “dressed people go into the limestone church ” (78), he, as a Christian, prayed to the God silently . However, Ruth didn‟t believe anything about God. Then they had a little discussion about this. Ruth believed that everything was born as they were, not because of the God. And Harry‟s long-lasting belief was wavered. After Harry returned home for the first time, he was suggested to go to the church representing his family. He stood there, considering himself “happy, lucky, blessed, forgiven, and wants to give thanks ” (201). He came back to his religious world.
