From pure in dustrial to collaborative con trol system (CCS) tool kits to home grown systems and any variation in-between. Decisions on the type of implementation should be driven by technical arguments Reality shows that finan cial and sociological reas ons form the complete picture. Any decisi on has it advantagesand it s drawbadReJi ability, good documentation and support are argume nts for in dustrial con trols. Finan cial argume nts drive decisi ons towards collaborative tools. Keep ing the hands on the source code and being able to solve problems on your own and faster tha n in dustry are the argume nt for home grow n soluti ons or ope n source soluti ons. The experie nee of many years of operati ons shows that which solution is the primary one does not matter, there are always areas where at least part of the other implementations exist. As a result heteroge neous systems have to be mai ntai ned. The support for differe nt protocols is esse ntial. This paper describes our experie nce with in dustrial con trol systems, PLC con trolled turn key systems, the CCS tool kit EPICS and the operability betwee n all of them. -INTRODUCTION th Process controls in general started at DESY in the early 80 with the in stallati on of the cryoge nic con trol system for the accelerator HERA (Hadr on- Elektro n-Ri ng-A nlage).
