Heart of Darkness Heart of Darkness is a novel written by Joseph Conrad, who is a famous English writer. Conrad is living a life full of contradiction. He loves his motherland, Portland, but chooses to live in England. This is much due to the persecution his parents received when he was young, which led him to a miserable childhood. He loves French literature, but writes his novels in English. He loves oceans and adventure, but decides to live on the land for most of his life. Apart from his rich experiences, Conrad also possesses good imagination and insight, which we can see from all of his works. He usually sets the characters in an isolated place,making them suffer from their human nature. The story begins with a sailing. The main character, Marlow, is assigned by his company to look for a missing employee, Kurtz, in Africa. Marlow is eager to find him, for he is regarded as a legend by other people. Kurtz is an idealist. Ambitious and cheerful, he comes to Africa with his lofty ideal which is to civilize the local people there. However, after finding him, Marlow loses all his hope and admiration. He thinks,“I can’t forget him, though I am not prepared to affirm the fellow was exactly worth the life we lost in getting to him.” In the end of the story, Kurtz dies. Marlow comes back to real world. In the process, Marlow experiences a lot of things which he will never forget for the rest of his life. In Africa, he sees how the so-called European civilization destroys Africa. Those empires try to conquer this primitive continent by violence. Africa people are ruled by the intruders, they work day and night until the last minute. They are not treated like people, they are just slaves. On the land, a lot of dead bodies are abandoned. People just starve to death. Those employers, they use local people to work for them. They do not care about them, they just care about money. All the
