PAGE 1 Comparative Culture Studies Fang Yongde August 2012 Description of the course Comparative Culture Studies (CCS) is a course designed for the undergraduate students in pursuit of English teaching and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. CCS is an interdisciplinary study across a number of areas in culture studies including a systematic introduction of culture in general and Chinese and Western cultures in particular, thus serving as an integrated part of the theoretical background and academic training of the students. CCS lays a special emphasis on cultural factors that interact with various levels of the Chinese and English languages so as to provide important and useful guidelines for language learning and teaching as well as for translation practice. CCS is a course given for one semester with 18 weeks, i.e. 36 classroom hours. The curricular activities include classroom lectures and exercises, and its extracurricular activities include academic reading and paper writing.
