Abstract With the accelerating of urbanization process, many cities have been beginning to build subways. The subways need configuring by the monitoring system which used to monitor the operating environment of subways. As more and more subsystems are added to the monitoring system, the scale of network is increased gradually. Many people notice the importance of network management. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a protocol that manages router devices on internet. This protocol has been developing for several decades and has formed a thorough theory gradually. Consequently, it has been an industrial standard of network management. The thesis bases on the Shenzhen metro line 2 that demands on network management. It describes a method how to design and implement a network management system with SNMP. The system uses hierarchical distributed architecture and contains a set of functions about the security management, configuration management, performance management, fault management and so on. The biggest difference is that the management of special equipment, such as large-screen controllers, UPS (Uninterruptable Power System), between this system and the common network management system. The thesis focuses on data acquisition module in the system. Because of the differences between the information and collection cycles, the module divided into configuration data collection, performance data collectiong and failure data collection. Through SNMP and ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol), the configuration data collection can discover all the valid routers and network nodes on the internet rapidly and accurately. Performance data collection by combination of information and configuration file increases flexibility of the system. Failure data collection pushes the data that have questions and timely reports the fault information to enhance the security of the system.
