The success rate of RD projects largely depends on the efficacy and efficiency of communications between related teams and individuals. This thesis explores the impact of the match between communication pattern and task type on project performance and task satisfaction. Based on literature review, task type, communication medium, task performance and task satisfaction associated with RD projects are defined, framework constructed, and eight hypotheses proposed. A three-stage research is conducted: 1) Single- case study is used to to verify the rationality of the hypotheses and framework; 2) Mult iple case study approach is employed to verify the hypotheses. Through formal and informal interviews, data are collected from 15 cases, among which 4 cases are chosen as representatives; 3) Hypotheses are further tested by questionnaire information. The conclusions are drawn from this research are as follows: 1) Face- to- face communication is the richest one in terms of contained information, with video as the second, audio the third, and computer is the last; 2) Ranking based on task satisfaction shows that face-to- face is identical to audio and they are better than the other two; 3) No significant difference judged by decision quality; 4) From the criterion of decision time, computer is the best, followed by video and audio, face-to- face in sequence. Finally, the degree of difference and complementation among research methods is discussed, supported by the project database of L Company. Furthermore, managerial implication is given and limitation indicated at t he end.
