EMS IMPROVES THE PERFORMANCE AT ALBA Introduction Addressing Employees and public environmental concerns, preventing pollution, complying with the National and International environmental standards, and aiming at continual improvement of the living and working environment at and around Alba were among the many reasons it turned Alba to develop an Environmental Management System (EMS). Employees wanted a safer environment; the EMS provides that with operations protocols and training. Management wanted a better definition of work, especially with hazardous materials, and Alba written protocols and procedures to help employees to maintain a certain work standard. Now with an EMS in place, Alba has uniformity in its operational controls and preventive measures to help minimize future risks. This helps Alba to save money and be in a better place. These cost savings were unintended benefits of implementing an EMS, but it proved that having an EMS in place equipped Alba for future needs. Thinking ahead is key when assessing an organization’s environmental management needs. Environmental improvement initiatives provide a framework for achieving the EMS objectives and targets, which support the Environmental policy and the overall goal of enhancing the environmental quality. Fluoride emission The most significant impact of an aluminium smelter is the release of fluorides in gaseous and particulate (dust) from to the atmosphere. To minimise this impact, Alba installed seven fume treatment plants (FTPs) during 1992-2002 at cost of us$130m. These FTPs treat the fumes produced in all four of albas reduction lines and from the anode baking kilns 1,2 and 3. In all, these FTPs prevent the emissions of 16,000 tonnes of fluorides in to the atmosphere every year. These fluoride recovered in the FTPs are recycled back in to process. Particulates (dust) emission The release of dust to the atmosphere is also an equally significant environmental impact of aluminium smelters. The seven fu
