Maintenance of Trees Shrubs Kansas State Research Extension Maintenance of Trees Shrubs Selection Planting Staking Watering Fertilizing Pruning Selecting Plants Select a tree with the proper hardiness (avg annual low temperature) Kansas City - Zone 5-6 Soil type – depth, pH, structure most roots are within top 26”-32” roots grow out 1-2X the height of the tree Moisture – wet or dry site Light – sun exposure (sun or shade) Utility infrastructure conflicts Selecting Plants Most trees should have a well developed central leader Branches should be well distributed (*) with wide angles Branches should be lined with live buds that are well distributed Inspect the trunk for wounds, poorly healed grafts, insects, etc. Shrubs should have sturdy, evenly arranged branches Containerized plants – look for plants in balance with their pots; reject excessively root-bound plants (circling roots) BB – balls should be solid, of adequate size Planting Dig a wide hole 2-3 times the pot diameter Remove the plant from its container and ensure that the roots are not tangled or wrapped in the shape of the pot Set the plant where the root flare is level with the soil Planting Backfill the hole with the original soil, water in thoroughly Build up a 1-2” berm to hold water around the perimeter of the site Apply a layer of mulch (2-4”) Planting Don’ts Amend the backfill with peat, sandy soil, or manure unless working up an entire bed. Dig the hole deeper than the container; leads to settling Prune heavily to balance the root/shoot ratio Tightly stake the tree so it can’t sway in the wind Fertilize Planting in Problem Sites In clay soil, vertically score the edge of the planting hole, to prevent clay pan from forming In poorly drained locations, plant high with 1/3 of root ball above grade, but be sure to cover with soil (create a mound) Staking Only install if absolutely necessary!
