An Evaluation of the Survival Period of Patients Following an Inpatient Rehabilitation Admission. Dr C Connolly*Dr F Kohler, Dr J Estell, Dr R Renton Braeside/Liverpool/Fairfield Rehabilitation Research Group (BLFRRG) Background Many of the underlying conditions which require an admission to the rehabilitation unit for an episode of inpatient care have a significantly increased mortality rate compared to the rest of the population Whilst the pioneers of rehabilitation medicine have demonstrated that rehab results in increased quality of life and minimised dependency, little research has been done to determine the survival period of patients who have undergone inpatient rehabilitation. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the survival period of patients following an inpatient episode of rehabilitation in our unit ? Setting the Scene Braeside Hospital is located in the south west of Sydney, approximately 35km by car from the CBD Braeside Hospital Purpose built, subacute, public health facility, opened 1996 36 General Rehabilitation beds, with referrals accepted for patients from the Liverpool / Fairfield Local Government area Age: 16yrs and older with no maximum age This area has a large migrant population and thus a significant proportion of the patients come from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. Method: Stage 1 Eight years after first full year of operation 1st January 1997 to 31st December 1997 Identify all patients admitted to the Braeside Rehabilitation Unit admission and discharge lists computerised data base containing the patient FIM data Method : Having identified the patients (n=297) Patient Administration System and Aged Care data base The last date of patient contact with a health service Any indication that the patient had died the date of death Result Stage 1 – AFRM 2006 Method Stage 2 Added next year of admissions 1998 (n=400) Search of Australian Death Index held by Australian Institute of Health and Welfare fo
