Introduction of Attributive Clauses An attributive clause is a dependent clause used as an adjective within a sentence. Also, it is known as an adjectival clause or a relative clause to modify the nouns, noun phrases or pronouns as an antecedent. An attributive clause usually follows an antecedent and begins with a relative pronoun (which, that, who, whom, whose), a relative adverb (where, when, why), or a zero relative, sometimes called contact clauses or contact relatives. 2. Types of Attributive Clauses The first type is the nonrestrictive or nonessential adjective clause. This clause simply gives extra information about the noun. It provides extra information of the main clause with a comma. The second type is the restrictive or essential adjective clause. It offers essential [information] and is needed to complete the sentences thought. 3. Examples 3.1 关系代词引导的定语从句 He is the man who/whom/ that I saw yesterday. A prosperity which / that had never been seen before appears in the countryside. They rushed over to help the man whose car had broken down. 3.2 关系副词引导的定语从句 Is this the reason why (for which) he refused our offer? Beijing is the place where (in which) I was born. There are occasions when (on which) one must yield. 3.3 限制性和非限制性定语从句 This is the house which we bought last month. The house, which we bought last month, is very nice. Charles Smith, who was my former teacher, retired last year. This novel, which I have read three times, is very touching. Liquid water changes to vapor, which is called evaporation. 3.4 介词+关系词 Do you remember the day on which you joined our club? = Do you remember the day when you joined our club? This is the house in which I lived two years ago. = This is the house where I lived two years ago.
