5. Dealing with Some Technical Terms/Jargons In your interpretation practice, it’s impossible for you not to come across some new words, especially some technical terms when you do the interpretation in a certain field. Of course it is always helpful to get well-prepared beforehand whenever you can. For example, collect and read some reports, some relevant reference books, materials or even cram some key words into you mind as many as possible. But still you cannot say you are always on the safe side for some new terms are sure to pop up here and there, which will create some unexpected obstacles in your interpretation. Here are some methods to deal with them in case you are confronted by them. 1) Use some synonyms or near synonyms In either your C-E or E-C interpretation, use some synonyms to replace the new words which you fail to understand based on the context. Interpretation is not so strict as translation. In order to keep the conversation going on, it is allowed to use synonyms as substitutes on condition the original meaning of the speaker is retained or without being changed. 2) Take a round-about way. When you hear a totally unknown technical term and you cannot find the right equivalent in the target language, don’t be panic and keep calm. You can ask the speaker to tell you the meaning of the word/term, the purpose or the function, then according to the context, you can paraphrase or explain the given meaning. For instance, “脆性”. Suppose you don’t know how to interpret in English, but you can explain that sth. its property is easy to be broken like a piece of glass. 3) Draw a simple sketch. Drawing is the common language for engineers and scientists.
