Technical efficiency in the sheep industry – opportunities and potential J P Hanrahan Teagasc, Animal Production Research Centre Athenry The focus of this paper is on lowland mid-season prime lamb production, as this represents the major source of output from the sheep sector. Any consideration of the future potential for technical efficiency gains must start from a clear appreciation of where we are now. In doing this the perspective I take is that sheep production is a business activity and so efficiency issues (inputs and outputs) are a central concern. The structure of the sheep sector, both nationally and at the level of the individual flock, will be outlined and some detailed analyses of data from the Teagasc National Farm Survey (NFS) will be used to highlight areas that influence the margins from the business. The objective is to put the current levels of performance in perspective and identify the key elements that should be part of any rational discussion on exploiting available technical opportunities that can increase the potential of the business of sheep production. This will lead to some consideration of research studies that will be summarised to indicate the potential for increasing productivity and margins from the business. The potential from our available genetic resources will be defined and prospects from breeding programmes will be indicated and some issues about product quality will be considered. Finally, the potential enterprise performance that can be achieved by adopting available technologies that have been developed and tested in Teagasc research programmes over the years will be outlined. This will set the goal for any sheep producer who seriously interested in approaching his sheep enterprise as a business.
