Master’s Thesis Teresita Scully 4/2000 Women Crafting Theology THE QUESTION Can we come to a deeper appreciation of the theological heritage of the women in our history by seeing how they used other intelligences in combination with logic? ASSUMPTIONS The assumptions that underlie this question are four-fold: that there is a need to make known the wonderful theological heritage of numerous women in our Christian history that this heritage is especially rich due to the combination of intelligences these women brought to the theological task that currently their theological contributions are under-appreciated that spirituality (lived theology) is inseparable from authentic theological thought and expression I have arrived at these assumptions both by personal experience and observation and by dialogue with others. Several years ago I served on a committee putting together the curriculum and lesson plans for a Diocesan Ecclesial Ministry Process. The other women and I searched diligently for a good historical source that included women. We found none. I have spoken to numerous women going through graduate and undergraduate studies who have asked the same question regarding the presentation of historical theology–where are the women? PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I grew up spiritually and psychologically with Teresa of Avila (1500’s), Catherine of Siena (1300’s), Julian of Norwich (1300’s), and Hildegard of Bingen (1100’s). I came to academic theological studies late in life and could hardly believe that in academic historical works, with the exception of very few lines, no woman is mentioned. Out of 343 pages, Alister McGrath, an Episcopalian scholar whose work is used on college campuses, devotes four and a half in a “Feminist” appendix of his Historical Theology. Lindwood Urban, an Episcopalian, has 15 pages toward the end of nearly four hundred devoted to a few women in A Short History of Christian Thought.
