Lab #5: LUNG ANATOMY, HEART SOUNDS, PULSE RATE AND BLOOD PRESSURE LAB This exercise will consist of four parts: 1) Examination of the fresh pig lung tissues, 2) Identification of respiratory organs/structures on the torso and larynx models, 3) Histology of the respiratory organs, and 4) Heart sounds, and measurement of pulse rate and systemic blood pressure. Try to work in groups of 3-4 students, especially when completing exercise #4. 1) IDENTIFICATION OF RESPIRATORY ORGANS/STRUCTURES ON HUMAN TORSO AND LARYNX MODELS: INTRODUCTION: Some torso models are less detailed than others. If you do not find the structure listed on one type of torso model, you may need to look at another model. The names of parts for you to locate (and learn about) are listed in a specific order to help make it easier to find them. Descriptions and added notes are given to direct your attention to special features. Your book may also be a useful resource in this regard. When you are done, please reassemble the model completely. STRUCTURES NEAR THE NASAL CAVITY (Fig 22.3 Saladin) 1. Nasal septum - Only a posterior part of it is shown. 2. Nasal conchae - The superior, middle and inferior nasal conchae are all represented on the model. They are not as clear-cut in humans as they are on this model. Note: the superior and middle nasal conchae are part of the ethmoid bone; the inferior nasal conchae are separate bones; the nasal conchae project medially from the lateral walls of the nasal cavity. 3. External nares - These openings are also called the nostrils. 4. Hard palate. Sometimes, when a fetus is exposed to alcohol when the mother drinks during pregnancy, the hard palate fails to fuse completely. This cleft palate is called a birth defect. This is a part of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and is unfortunately common in college aged women. The cleft palate needs to be surgically corrected for the child to learn to speak. 5.
