Among his great works, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of his masterpieces. It brings realism to a climax. The novel, through the description of how a child’s morals and actions clash with those of the society he lives in, gives a vivid picture of Southern American in 1850’s, and reveals the inhumanity, cruelty and hypocrisy at that time. Mark Twain shows realism in almost every aspect of his novel. First of all, the author exposes the cruelty and hypocrisy of the society by means of praising the two main characters—Huck and Jim, who are from the lowest class. Meanwhile the author shows the hatred of brutal slavery and the desire of freedom and democracy. Second, Mark Twain satirizes the falseness and hypocrisy of the education, the religions and the romantics. Third, the first person narration, detailed description device, picaresque style and the diction, all contribute to the realistic technique of the novel. From above aspects we can also gain a better understanding of the author: he was a man with a great hatred of inhumanity and cruelty of the societ
