MET ODS Culture techniques and confocal laser scanning microscop w ere used to monitor t he process of L eg ionella attachment to the surface of recirculation loops and formation of the biofilm. RESULTSAfter 5 weeks of adhesion and mult iplication of the L eg ionell ap ne umop hil a , a stable ecos stem in the pilotscale w ater recirculation s stem w as established, more than 95. 8% L eg ionella strains contained in the biof ilm. Colonization of L eg ionella in biofilms w as significantl higher in t he recirculation 4 2 3 2 loops ( 7. 8 10 CFU/ cm ) , comparing with t he dead legs ( 1. 5 10 CFU/ cm ) . CONCLUSIONS L . p ne umop hila biofilms are successfull established in pilotscale w ater s stems. T he biofilms pla an important role in proliferation of L eg ionella.
