The Gold Rush (1848-1858) The California Gold Rush Part 1 An accidental discovery Early on a January morning in 1848, James Marshall went to check on a sawmill he was building on s riverbank. As he looked into the river, he saw something shiny in the sand on the river bottom . It was GOLD. With the discovery, Marshall started the largest gold rush in history. By 1849, eager treasure hunters, known as forty-niners, pouring into northern Californias mountains. Hundreds of mining towns sprang up, filled with men eager to get rich quickly. James Marshall I reached my hand down and picked it up; it made my heart thump, for I was certain it was gold. The piece was about half the size and shape of a pea. Then I saw another. Part 2 The Gold Rush began on January 24, 1848, when gold was discovered by James Marshall. News of the discovery soon spread, resulting in many people coming to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. The California gold rush was a world event, attractng gold-seekers from Mexico, China, Germany, France, Turkey and around the world. *3 million hunters *by sea and by land *1849-1851 western cowboy Chinese laborers abroad The Gold Rush is an important part of the Westward Expansion. In the early 19 century ,America began the west expansion, the territory of America soon expanded to the west coast of California .The unprecedented gold rush stimulated both the westward expansion and the development of the west of America . The Positive Effects *The Gold Rush transformed the economy of California, including the types of prouducts produced and consumed. *San Francisco grew from a tiny hamlet to a boomtown, and roads, churches, schools and other towns were built throughout California. *New methods of transportation developed as steamships came into regular service, and railroads were built. * A system of laws and a government was created, leading to the
