The Romanticism In England Romanticism It is a new trend in literature at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries in England which was concerned with the expression of the individuals feelings and emotions. Mark: Romanticism prevailed during the period of 1798-1832, beginning with the publication of Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballads, ending with Walter Scott’s death. The general features The general features of the works of the romanticists is a dissatisfaction with the bourgeois society and the great attention to the spiritual and emotional life of man. Their writings are filled with strong-willed heroes, formidable events, tragic situation, powerful conflicting passions, and exotic pictures. Sometimes they resort to symbolic methods. Nature , often personified , also plays an important role in their works. Two schools Generally speaking, the romanticists expressed the sentiment of those who were discontent with, and opposed to , the development of capitalism. They split into two schools. 1.the passive or escapist romanticists, represented by Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey, who protest against the capitalist development, turn to the feudal past and turn to nature for protection. 2. the active romanticism represented by Byron, Shelley and Keats, who held out an ideal of a future society free from oppression and exploitation. The Romantic Period was one of poetical revival. Romantic prose was represented by Lamb, Hazilitt, De Quincey and Hunt. The only great novelist in this period was Walter Scott, who marked the transition from romanticism to realism. Romantic Poets of the first generation Lake Poets: Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey who lived in the lake district in the northwestern part of England.
