ENGLISH WRITING COURSE FOR ENGLISH MAJORS Three questions about writing: Ques. 1 What is writing? Writing is thinking on paper, or talking to someone on paper. Ques. 2 How can you write well? If you can think clearly, or if you talk to someone about things you know or care about, you can writewith confidence and enjoyment. Ques. 3 Is writing hard work? The answer is yes. Writing is by no means an easy job. A clear sentence is no accident. Very few sentences come out right the first time, or the third time. Remember this in moments of despair. If you find that writing is hard, it’s because it is hard. It’s one of the hardest things people do. Chapter 1 Manuscript Form and Punctuation Objectives: Be familiar with the manuscript form of English writing in general Be able to arrange the manuscript form concerning the title, spacing, the margins, and capitalization Learn to divide word correctly Know how to use different punctuation marks correctly I. Arrangement (layout) 1. Space: using double space or writing on every other line 2. Margin: leaving a margin on each side of the paper. 3. Title: centering the title and capitalizing some words 4. Indention: leaving a space of about 4 or 5 letters * II. Word Division 1. one-syllable words: cannot be divided 2. don’t leave one letter either at the end or at the beginning of a line 3. don’t put a two-letter syllable at the beginning of a line, e.g. ed (play-ed) 4. don’t divide words in a way that may cause misunderstanding or confusion 5. words with hyphens 6. two-syllable words with double consonants in the middle 7. avoid separating proper nouns 8. the last word on a page cannot be divided 9. the way to divide derivatives: prefix and suffix III. Capitalization 1. used mainly at 3 places: 1) the first word of a sentence 2) key words in the title, and 3) proper names 2. common nouns that are part of proper names 3. words derived from proper names are usually capitalized IV.
