The Functions of Tom’s Narration in The Glass Menagerie [Abstract] Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie is a memory play. There is a narrator from whose memory the events of the play are recollected. The narrator steps into the action several times to address to the audience. Through his narration many content and artistic informations are revealed. It provides the audience with the social information, character information and supplement plot. Also, artistically, it lays bare the devices which direct the audience’s interpretation and holds artistic values. [Key word] content information, laying bare the devices, directing audience’ interpretation, artistic values 1. Introduction Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie is a memory play. There is a narrator who is also a character in the play. In his opening remark of the play, the narrator tells the audience that he shits back to the thirties to tell the story of his family. Then he appears at the beginning of three scenes and the end of last scene to address to the audience. Being a memory play, the play has episodic plots covering seven scenes. The first scene mainly tells about the story of Amanda, the narrator’s mother, who clings to her good old days talking about her gentlemen callers. The second scene is mainly about Laura, the narrator’s sister, who drops out of the business school after her failure in the typing test and lives in a world of her own. The third and fourth scenes are about the tense relation between Tom, the narrator, and Amanda. Tom lives in the dream, longing for adventures and resorting to books, movies, drinks and writing poems to escape the reality, while Amanda needs him to support the family by his keeping the depressing job at the warehouse of a shoemaker. The fifth and sixth scenes tell the story about Jim, the coming gentleman caller, through the dialogue between Tom and Amanda, and the family’s preparation for Jim’s coming.
