Abstract Abstract Deep space exploration is an important way to understand the universe for human, the detection data produced from which needs to store in high-speed and real-time, so that it can regarded as all kinds of follow-up study basis, so it must put forward higher request for the speed of data transmission speed, storage capacity, store capacity and storage reliability and so on. As a new generation of disk interface bus, SATA has a number of prominent function and characteristics needed in detection data. This paper detailedly introduces and analyses the agreement with the relevant design of SATA content, then constructs the hierarchical structure of the SATA hard disk host controller according to the results of analysis, and designs detailedly, then programs each module based on the above using Verilog, and then simulates all modules on ModelSim, and last comprehensively tests this design in Xilinx ML507 development board. The ultimate test show that SATA hard disk host controller based on Xilinx FPGA designed in this paper meets SATA agreement needs, and has some advantages such as convenient use, highly integration and low cost, and make development become quick and convenient, more able to adapt to the demand of the market. At present, SATA has been widely used in the storage areas, but there is less independent research and development for SATA hard disk host controller used in FPGA in China. Therefore, it is vital significance to design the SATA hard disk host controller used in FPGA, it allows the user to bypass complex and tedious SATA agreement.
