Ltd. , Beijing 100120, China) Abstract: The elastic-plastic strength reduction FEM is a very effective method for the slope stability analy- ses. This paper begins w ith the FEM increment equation and analyses characteristic of the method, and then makes a discussion of how to determine the sliding surface and the characteristic of unstable failure. Finally, there is an engineering example of the slope stability computation w hich show that the elastic- plastic strength reduction FEM is very simple and effective, and has guiding significance for practical eng-i neering.
