Cultures and Idioms Translation 文化与习语的翻译 摘要：语言是文化的载体，语言与文化之间有着非常密切的关系。习语是人们经过长期使用而提炼出来的精华，是人们长期习用的形式简单而又意思精辟的定型词组或短语。受自然环境，风俗，宗教，思维方式，文学典故，经济贸易发展的影响，中英习语有着明显的文化差异。由于语言与文化的关系，翻译中存在的文化障碍越来越引起翻译研究者的重视。习语翻译要处理好语言与文化的关系，不仅要译出原语习语的形象喻义，还要译出其民族特色和地域色彩。因此，深刻分析习语翻译的技巧有利于我们更好的理解和应用文化背景知识。 关键词：文化差异； 英汉习语； 翻译 Abstract: Language is the carrier of culture. Language and culture have close relationship . Idioms are the gems of a language which have been refined through ages of application. Idioms are fixed sentences or phrases which are concise in forms and comprehensive in meanings. Influenced by natural environments, customs, religions, thinking ways, and so on. Chinese and English idioms have obvious cultural discrepancies. Owing to this, translation theorists and translators have put more attention to the cultural barriers that exist in translation. In the process of idioms translating, relations between language and culture must be properly approached so as to interpret the original idioms’ connotation and image as well as their nationalities and their regional features. Therefore, analyzing the techniques of idioms translation helps us better understand the cultural background knowledge. Key words: cultural differences, English and Chinese idioms, translationIntroduction Idiom is a unique and fixed expression of certain language that forms during the process of application. Both Chinese and English are abundant in idioms. Besides, colloquial styles, proverbs, mottoes and even slangs, idioms also include fixed phrases and expressions. In some Chinese dictionaries, idiom includes proverbs mottoes, fixed phrases and signs. To grasp idioms and be able to understand and use them correctly is a sign of mastering the mother language and the foreign language. English and Chinese, with their long histories, have a great number of idioms. Some are impact and humorous, some are serious and elegant. Idioms’ conciseness and vividness give people a feeling of enjoying beautiful things.
