DESIGN OF A TWO-CHANNEL SOLID-STATE CLASS-A AUDIO POWER AMPLIFIER BY WENG LOONG FOONG DAVID NEO ECE 345 In Seop Lee, TA 4-30-99 Team #47 ABSTRACT A two-channel Class-A audio power amplifier was designed and operated with high fidelity and low distortion. The amplifier performs amplification of a line signal and outputs through an 8( load. The transistors are restricted to operation in the linear region to achieve greatest linearity. Biasing was done with a constant current source in a push-pull configuration to reduce the peak current needed for biasing to half. Using this circuitry, an efficiency of 39.7% was achieved, greater than the usual 20-25% of normal Class-A amplifiers. The maximum deviation of the gain frequency response was demonstrated to be within 1 dB in the 20Hz to 20kHz range. The distortion of the amplifier averaged around 2.5% over the said frequency range. 1. Introduction The project involved designing and constructing a high-fidelity Class-A amplifier. Design was solid-state based and biased with a constant current source in a push-pull configuration. The final product is to be compatible for use with any conventional audio input, which has been pre-amplified, and output is to be coupled through conventional 8( speakers. The choice of solid-state over vacuum tubes is largely because solid-state amplifiers are more dynamic in nature, and are hence better able to amplify frequencies in the low to mid-range, and because solid-state amplifiers are more cost effective and have lower maintenance costs than their counterparts. Overview of Output Classifications Output stages of amplifiers are classified according to the standards shown in Table 1.1.
