* This table illustrates the forces that are influencing working and learning. They affect individuals, communities, businesses and society. To survive companies must address these forces – with training playing an important role. Let us look at each of these forces in a little more detail. * More and more companies are interested in developing intellectual capital and in order to do this organisations must attract, develop and retain knowledge workers in order to gain the competitive edge. Organisations can attempt to do this by developing and empowering employees. Empowering means giving emplooyees responsibility and authority to make decisions regarding all aspects of product development or customer service. Employees must up to date with tools for communication. Change refers to the adoption of a new idea or behaviour by a company. Change is inevitable. In order to be able to meet the demands of a changing environment, employees and the organisation must embrace a philosophy of change. Learning organisation embraces a culture of lifelong learning in order to enable employees to continually acquire and share knowledge. * In order for organisations to compete in the global and local markets there needs to be a strict adherence to the quality factor of their product or service.TQM is a company wide effort to contiuously improve the ways people, machines and systems accomplish work. * One of the major challenges facing organisations is that of workforce diversity. Diversity in the population backgrounds. skills, and where work is performed.
