* * * * Developers can use any of Oracle’s popular development tools to create applications. For example, Oracle Application Express is shown here, but developers can also use Oracle JDeveloper, Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse and Oracle Workshop for WebLogic. Application Express is actually one of our jewels. Using it, developers can quickly and easily build web-based departmental applications using Oracle Database. We call it “Apex” for short. For example, Oracle has built an internal employee directory called Aria and a internal micro-blogging application called OraTweet using Apex. There’s a free hosted version at , so you don’t even need to set up your own Oracle Database to get started. Alternatively, if you deploy Oracle Database on Amazon EC2 using our Amazon Machine Image (AMI), you will get Apex automatically as well. We see Dev/Test as one of the most popular uses of public clouds at the moment. Once you’ve built your app, you have a number of deployment choices, such as in your own data center, Amazon EC2, or one of a number of Apex hosters that are out there. Unlike some other Development-as-a-Service tools (e.g., from ), Apex does not lock you into a particular deployment choice. There are 16,000 accounts at (hosted dev workspaces), with 200-300 new ones requested per week. Currently available for free; may have a paid-for offering in the future with production SLAs.
