Many times we can figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word from clues provided by context. The context clues that might be helpful for you to recognize the meaning of a new word include: 1. Some sentences give the definition for a difficult word with the help of punctuation such as commas, dashes or parentheses. Example: A spelunker is a person with a strange hobby—caves. A spelunker crawls into a hole in the ground for just one reason: he enjoys it. Explanation: From the definition we know that a spelunker enjoys crawling into caves and takes this as a hobby. So we guess it means “洞穴探险家”. 2. Context sometimes gives examples to illustrate a difficult word rather than define it. We can use the examples to figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. Example: Perhaps the world’s most pressing problem is shortage of food, particularly of foods rich in proteins. Traditional sources of proteins are meat, fish, eggs and milk. Grains such as wheat and rice contain protein but in much smaller amounts. Explanation: The context provides us with some examples of food rich in protein. So we know it is a kind of nutrition rich in meat, fish, eggs and milk, but not in grains. Therefore we can figure out the meaning of “protein” as “蛋白质”. 3. Synonyms ( 同义词)
