a. Forces for Change
Seen from Lewin’s force field analysis, we can know the reason why the strategy of the organization has changed over time is that the driving forces outbalance the restraining forces.
Take J D Wetherspoon as the example, it changed its business strategy from product development to diversification in the 21st century.
The restraining forces to its change may be the follows:
Fear of failure.
There is no doubt that there may be fear of failure for organizations which plan to change its business strategy.
B. Fear of unknown
As the company has not tried the changes before, it may face many uncertainty and unknown situations.
The driving forces to its change are as follows:
A. Increased competition
There is no doubt that increased competition will force organization change its strategy. As mentioned in the case study, the reason why J D Wetherspoon changed its strategy in the 21st century was that the competition increased.
B. Shorter product life cycles
This means consumers needs change more and more fast, so it could force organizations update its products, that is, change the strategy.
C. Changing markets
The change of market could force the change of strategy within an organization. As mentioned in the case, due to the bars market is saturated, J D Wetherspoon changed its strategy by the ways of serving breakfast, developing family dining and offering accommodation.
Compared the above two kinds of forces, we can see that as long as J D Wetherspoon better plan, operate and monitor the change process, the restraining forces could be removed, so the driving forces will outbalance the restraining forces, as a result, the business strategy changed.
b. The Stakeholder Power in Leading to Organization Change
As we know, stakeholders are individuals or groups that affect or are affected by an organization. So there is no doubt that stakeholder power can lead to change in an organization.
