Literature Review Upon Blues the Features in Invisible Man Introduction Ralph Ellison, the famous Afro-American writer, creatively applies Blacks music, especially Blues to his novel--Invisible Man. The novels narrative structure is very unique, with variable writing styles and complex and profound themes, which involve problems such as race, politics, society and psychological conflicts etc. It is an initiation novel about a young black mans search for his identity. In addition, it also explores the existence and value of Afro-Americans, highlighting the self dignity and self-seeking in a society with racial discriminations. 1.1. On the Book Invisible Man, written by Ralph Ellison, was first published in 1952, and won the National Book Award. The book describes the protagonist, an unnamed black young mans growing experiences. The protagonist, once a good student and obedient to white men, one day on his graduation ceremony was forced to make a speech for important white men in town after seeing a blonde dancing and attending a fight among a group of black boys. In the third year in college, he was expelled from school, because a wealthy white trustee of the college was hurt when he was out with the protagonist. Then, the protagonist started his search for job in New York City. There he experienced a lot, including meeting a good-hearted landlord Mary, attending an organization named Brotherhood and having conflicts with extreme racist Rat... After a riot in Harlem, the protagonist finally ran away and fell through a manhole. Since then, he decided to stay underground and be an invisible man. The whole novel begins and ends with the protagonists underground life, while the protagonist remains bewildered regarding his own identity but determined to honor his individual complexity and his obligations to society as an individual.
