Unit 13 Employee Benefits and Services Warm up Interview: Talk to your parents, relatives or friends about their benefits at work and find out the most popular ones. Discussion: Does the nature of ownership (state-owned, private-owned, foreign-owned, etc.) affect the benefits and services the organization offers to its employees? In this unit, we will cover: Definition What are benefits and services? In what ways are they different from pay? And incentives? Why is it beneficial for an organization to offer benefits to employees? What if they don’t? Benefits I Of the different categories of benefits listed in the text, which ones are you familiar with? Which ones do you think are necessary and which ones not? If you work for the government, what kinds of benefits do you expect to have? How about working for a foreign company? Benefits II Mandated benefit programs (1) Why are they “mandated”? What are the three major mandated benefit programs in the U.S.? What is unemployment insurance? Who are not covered? How is it paid?
