On American Health Care System Most Chinese are probably under such an illusion that the United States is the most ideal place to live in since they can assure themselves of the “fact” through a seemingly reasonable deduction棗the US is largest economy in the world, which undoubtedly provides a strong material basis for everything they may need棗lots of job opportunities, good environment and safety guarantee as well as immense social welfare, in which a desirable universal health care system should have been included. Amongst those visionaries was me who used to take it for granted that America should be like the above-mentioned or even better; however I was startled when the fact was unveiled by my teacher Angelo who showed us a documentary 棗Sicko, which ironically exposed the darkness inside the US medical system. I begin to realize that we Chinese students are so “ill-informed” of what a real America is and that it seems to be always the case that we are kept in the dark until a westerner comes up to “let the cat out of the bag”. I think anyone who happens to learn the fact will question “why doesn’t the US provide a universal health care for its citizens?”I’ve long deliberated on it and come up with some ideas about it. In the following paragraphs, I’ll focus my analyses on three facets, namely the values, the government and corporations, to illuminate the question mentioned above. When it comes to values which people use as a yardstick to measure and identify things, I’ve sorted out three tendencies long involved in the Americans historically and contemporarily. They are composed of a belief in freedom of choice, an unwillingness to have the government’s involvement and a fear of socialism. To begin with, the Americans can never fail to emphasize the freedom of individual choice, which has been deeply rooted in their minds as an infallible creed. Such a belief can even account for the initial purpose for the American constitution to allow individual ownership
