The Aim The study of this course is to cultivate in the listeners an interest and a sense of the development of English and American literature, so as to make the students learn the essence of the language, the culture of the English people and also pratice the approaches of literary criticism. The Requirements of the Course 1. prepare before class 2. be active in class (participate and take notes) 3. edit/tidy up notes/the learned after class 4. be diligent in the abundant readings 5. find the relevant literary critisism to read to make yourself sensitive and high tasted to the artistic techniques in the works Chapter One The Anglo-Saxon Period (449-1066) The main literary contribution of this period is the Epic, and its masterpiece is the national epic, The Song of Beowulf, which is a long poem of 3182 lines about the deeds of the Teutonic (条顿) hero Beowulf in the 6th century. It is the oldest poem in the English language and the oldest surviving epic in Anglo-Saxon literature. epic 史诗:a long narrative poem on the adventures and great deeds of heroes,and reflecting the values of the society from which it originated. Chapter Two Medieval English Literature(11-15th )中世纪英语(盎格鲁-诺曼) 时期 The literature which they brought to England is remarkable for its bright, romantic tales of love and adverture, in marked contrast with the strength and somberness of Anglo-Saxon poetry. Romance (传奇，骑士文学)：a tale in verse, embodying the life and adventues of knights.The content of romance was usually about love, chivalry and religion. The most famous romance was Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
