英美诗歌选读第8周(爱情抒情诗) 英美诗歌选读
Selected Readings of British American Poetry Lecture 8: Love Lyrics Question (continue with Byron’s poem) 1. What are the similes and images used to describe this lady? 2. How is the lady characterized?? 3. Can you picture a woman like the one in this poem?? In your imagination, is she seen in slow motion, with soft-focus?? 4. Does the fact that the actual lady is in mourning and is Byrons cousin affect your picture of her? Analysis The construction of the poem is marvelous whether we appreciate the poem in the aspects Lord Byron characterizes the lady or the rhythm of rhyme the poet arranges. The poet introduces the lady to the readers in order---he shows readers what she looks like in the beginning, by which the speaker successfully gives the great first impression to the readers about the lady. Analysis Then Lord Byron turns to tell the readers the innocence of the sweet-heart, persuading readers that the inside of beauty really corresponds with her perfect figure. The arrangement of rhyme is ABABAB CCCCCC DADADA. the rhyme of the 1st and 3rd stanza runs like a circle, which suggests the speakers constant love for the lady; the rhyme of the 2nd of stanza just implies it is straight and violent the speaker has admiration for the lady. Analysis the foot scheme is iambic tetrameter/ four iambic feet When You Are Old by Yeats When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book,And slowly read, and dream of the soft lookYour eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace,And loved your beauty with love false or true. But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars,Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fledAnd paced upon the mountains overheadAnd hid his face amid a crowd of stars. 当你老了叶芝 当你老了,满头白发,充满睡意, 在火炉旁打盹时,你取下这本书, 慢慢地读,慢慢回忆你昔日眉目 的柔和还有你眼中深深的忧郁; 多少人爱过你美好温雅的
