On 19th, Nov. 1863, when he was invited to attend the ceremony at which the battlefield of Gettysburg was dedicated as a national cemetery for the soldiers who were killed in that battle during the American Civil War, he delivered the now-famous Gettysburg Address. 2)The American Civil War The chief and immediate cause of the American Civil War was a difference between the North and the South over slavery. The south, which was developing into an agricultural society, held that slavery was right, while the North, developing into an industrial society, felt just as strongly that it was wrong. During the Civil War, 11 Southern states seceded from the Union (=U.S.A.): South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee. Together, they formed the political union called the Confederacy. At the conclusion of the war on Apr. 9, 1865, the Confederacy ceased to exist. On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order for the abolition of slavery in areas controlled by the Confederate States of America. 3)The U.S. government: the United States is a federal Union of 50 states. The Federal Constitution outlines the structure of the national government, its powers and activities. Other activities are the responsibility of the individual states, which have their own constitu
