Components of a Lesson Plan
Teaching Aims
The first thing to do in lesson planning is to decide the aims of a lesson, which includes:
1) what language components to present,
2) what language skills to practice,
3) when activities to conduct and
4) what materials and teaching aids to be used.
Language contents and skills
In language teaching, it is important for the teacher to know exactly what language contents will be taught and what language skills will be practiced in the lesson.
1) Language contents: structure (grammar), vocabulary, function, topics, etc.
Language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, integrated skills
Teaching stages and procedures
“3P” Model: Presentation, Practice and Production
“5-step”Approach: Review, Presentation, Drill, Practice, Consolidation
I. Teaching Pronunciation
Warning up
Getting students to repeat the sound in chorus
Contrast one sound with other sounds
Getting individuals to repeat the sound
Say the sound alone
Say the sound in a word
Say the sound in meaningful contexts

Giving assignments
II. Teaching Grammar
Find one grammar point from anyone of the lessons and organize the teaching of this point in English
Giving detailed grammar rules in English
Getting the students to practice using the rules in sentences
Helping the students to consolidate the grammar with exercises or language games or suing grammar in context

III.Teaching Vocabulary
Present the words to be learned in a lesson
Explain the meaning and usage of words by giving examples
Consolidating vocabulary the students have learned by doing exercises
