( Beij ing K ey L aboratory of E nv iron mental Science and Engineering , Sc ool of C emical Engineering E nv ironment, Beij ing I nstitute of T ec nology , Beij ing 100081) Abstract: Because of the shortage of resources supply , secondary bat tery has developed rapidly in recent years which aroused widespread public concern. In this paper, life cycle assessment w as applied to assess the environment impact of three kinds of secondary batteries: leadacid battery, Ni Cd battery and Li ion batt ery. The results obtained from life cycle assessment softw are ( Simapro) show ed that generating electricity of 1 000 kW h, t he ecoindicat or point of leadacid, Ni Cd and Li ion batteries were 28. 1 , 29. 76 and 3. 93 Pt respectively. Therefore, these follow ing conclusions could be drawn: in the condition of producing the same amount of energy , Ni Cd battery had the greatest damage to environment because the toxicity of its main raw material. The environmental im pact of leadacid batt ery was slightly lower than that of Ni Cd battery although it had the largest consumption of natural resources.T he envi ronment impact of Li ion battery was far less than leadacid and Ni Cd batteries due to its perfect bat tery performance and the less utilization of toxic and harmful substances.
