Arthur Drexler, for example, long-time director of the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modem Art, confessed to me in 1981 that one of his lifes ambitions was to take over the museum, as his colleague William Rubin had recently done with Picasso, and devote every available gallery space to a massive Wright retrospective. As we discussed this project in the early 1980s, we concluded that nothing less would be appropriate for documenting and interpreting Wrights colossal achievement. Such an exhibition would require a massive catalogue, coinciding ideally with a multivolume critical biography of Wright of the scope of Leon Edels recently published study of Henry James, a book that would critically deconstruct, reconstruct, explicate, interpret, and connect Wrights ideas and buildings with his life and his world. Though Drexler did not live to create this exhibition, his successor, Terence Riley, mounted an ambitious and illuminating two-floor retrospective, even if it did not realize Drexlers dream of “taking over the museum. Still, no architectural Edel has yet appeared to analyze and integrate the life, the work, and the larger context with the depth, richness, and elegance that Wrights story demands. Lewis Mumford was the kind of critic/historian who was capable of doing it, which makes it regrettable that when his publisher suggested such a work, he considered it briefly and then said no.
