Advanced design technique of human-machine interfacesfor PLC control of complex systemsárpád-IstvánSüt?*and Eugen IoanGergely**AbstractTouchscreen operator panels proved to be aconvenient succesor for clasical operator panels forimplementing human-machine interfaces (HMIs) inprogrammable logic controllers (PLC) systems.Thepaper introduces a new technique for HMIs design insuch systems, based on the idea of touchscreensreplication. This redundancy allow actions which are notpossible within the menus and sub-menus of a singletouchscreen. Its strenght is revealed especially in complexsystems, where operators can easily be overwhelmed bythe huge amount of processinformation. The techniquewas applied on a mill tube rolling installation. The resultsalso proved an increase of system security and zero down-time for HMI maintenance activities.Keywords: human-machine interface, programmablelogic controller, touchscreen replicationINTRODUCTIONNowadays solutions for visualizing data and control ofautomated processes have to fulfill increasing stringentrequests on what does it mean quality and precision of thepresented information from the perspective of process andthe tools of process control.Today, industrial process operators are challenged to takeover increasing responsibility regarding the control of theindustrial process. Correct decisions in process control canbe taken only if the information the operators possess isunitary, relevant and well adapted to the human operatorsneeds.
