How should college graduates define success?
Peter Buffett
This spring, about 1.65 million young men and women will graduate from American colleges and universities. Thats a staggering number. These graduates will be entering a grudging and highly competitive job market. But I would argue that parallel to the challenges facing the graduates is an opportunity as momentous as the economic conditions that spawned it. ?
Back in March, The New York Times published a story headlined, More College Graduates Take Public Service Jobs. The article talked about a cohort of young (people) who ended up doing good because the economy did them wrong. the articles author, Catherine Rampell, used a term I thought was particularly resonant: these people were recalibrating their ambitions and their goals. ? ?
Now lets be honest. Its doubtful the shift toward public service jobs can simply be ascribed to a sudden outbreak of altruism. Young people — many of whom are heavily burdened with school debt, all of whom face a world where a gallon of gas or a cup of coffee costs $4 — have every reason to be pragmatic. The shift toward careers in public service has had to do, in large part, with the hard facts of a bad economy and a private sector that hasnt been hiring. ?
The recalibration thats going on, then, is not just about the arithmetic of money; its about the far subtler calculus of worth. Difficult economic conditions have forced recent graduates to pause before diving into their own futures, and to ask some basic questions. What do I really want to do with my life? What will I feel good abou
